# "Kitna Deti Hai" Is the Wrong Question: Cost Per Kilometre Is the Answer

> Mileage tells you how far a litre takes you. Cost per kilometre tells you what every trip actually costs. Here is how to calculate it, and why the two numbers rarely agree.

Every driver knows their mileage figure. Almost none know their cost per kilometre. Those two numbers measure different things, and confusing them is how people end up surprised at the end of the month.

Ask any driver how their car is performing and they quote mileage: "15 km/l city, maybe 18 on the highway." That number has exactly one job: it tells you how far one litre takes you. What it does not tell you is what you are actually spending to cover each kilometre you drive, and that gap between the two figures is where most vehicle budgeting quietly falls apart.

Cost per kilometre is not a complicated idea. It is simply total fuel spending divided by total distance. But when you work it out properly with real fill-up data, it surfaces things mileage alone will never show you: the effect of city congestion versus highway driving, the slow creep of a clogged air filter, the difference in running cost between two vehicles that look identical on paper. Mileage is a ratio. Cost per kilometre is a rupee amount, and rupees are what you actually pay.

## Why Mileage Is Not Enough

A mass-market hatchback rated at 18 km/l ARAI and a slightly older sedan rated at 15 km/l. Which one costs more to run? The obvious answer is the sedan, because 15 km/l means more litres per kilometre. But that answer depends entirely on what you are paying per litre, and petrol prices in India reset every morning at 6 AM and vary by city. Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru all charge different amounts at the pump. The cost of a kilometre in your car today is not a fixed number, and a mileage figure cannot account for that.

Add to that the fact that most drivers do not actually achieve their rated mileage. City traffic, AC loads, tyre pressure, driving habits, the gradual accumulation of carbon in the fuel system: all of these trim the real number. A car that returned 16 km/l six months ago might be doing 13.5 now. The mileage figure you carry in your head is probably the one from your best highway run, not the one that represents your daily spending.

And since April 2026, every petrol fill-up in India is E20, the 20% ethanol blend. Government estimates put the mileage effect at roughly 1 to 2 percent for vehicles calibrated for E20, and up to 6 to 7 percent for older vehicles. If you are still running the same mental mileage figure you had a year ago, you are working from a number that may already be off, not because your vehicle has a problem, but because the fuel changed. There is no way to know your own real effect without a tank-to-tank log.

## The Actual Calculation

Cost per kilometre from a single fill-up works like this. You filled 35 litres at ₹105.50 per litre in Chennai. That fill-up cost ₹3,692.50. Since the previous fill-up, you drove 462 kilometres. Your cost per kilometre for that tank: ₹3,692.50 divided by 462 equals ₹7.99 per km.

For comparison, if your mileage for that tank was 462 divided by 35, that is 13.2 km/l. Both numbers are factually correct. The difference is that ₹7.99/km is the number you can add to your toll, parking and maintenance costs to get a true per-kilometre running figure. The 13.2 km/l tells you nothing useful about rupees.

Now run the same math for your next tank after a service, or after you properly inflated your tyres, or after switching from city driving to a week of highway work. The cost per kilometre moves, and you can see exactly how much. A tyre pressure correction that brings mileage from 12.8 to 13.5 km/l, at ₹105 per litre, is a saving of roughly ₹0.43 per kilometre. If you drive 1,500 km a month, that is ₹645 a month from a free action you could have taken at any petrol station.

That is the kind of arithmetic that mileage alone cannot surface. You need the fuel price baked in.

## Patterns You Only See Across Multiple Tanks

A single tank-to-tank calculation gives you a data point. Five tanks give you a pattern. Ten tanks give you a baseline that survives the noise of one unusually congested week or one long highway trip that inflated the number.

Common patterns that appear in a proper multi-tank log:

  - A slow upward drift in cost per kilometre over three to four months, with no change in driving habits, usually points to a service item: air filter, fuel injectors, spark plugs on older petrol vehicles.

  - A sharp one-tank spike followed by a return to normal is usually a partial fill (someone topped off early) or an outlier drive, congested city running with the AC at max in 40-degree heat.

  - A step-change at a particular date, where cost per kilometre settles at a new higher level, often corresponds to a fuel price revision or a change in the blend.

  - The city/highway split, which most drivers sense but cannot quantify, becomes visible. A car that costs ₹6.20/km on the highway and ₹9.80/km in city traffic is not broken; that is just what city driving costs.

None of this is visible if you are tracking "kitna deti hai" by memory or looking at the dashboard display. It requires actual numbers, across actual fill-ups, with fuel price captured each time. That is why the question to ask is not "what is my mileage?" but "what did I spend per kilometre last month, and how does that compare to three months ago?"

## CNG, Diesel and Dual-Fuel: Same Logic, Different Units

CNG vehicle owners need to track in km/kg, not km/l, because CNG is dispensed by weight. The cost per kilometre logic is identical: total fill cost divided by kilometres driven. A CNG fill of 4 kg at ₹92 per kg in Ahmedabad costs ₹368. If you drove 180 km on that fill, cost per kilometre is ₹368 divided by 180, which is ₹2.04/km. That is your number. Compare it to what petrol would cost you over the same distance, which at 14 km/l and ₹100/l would be about ₹7.14/km, and you see why people switch. But the CNG advantage only holds if you are tracking both fuels separately, which matters especially for dual-fuel vehicles where petrol-only legs on a long trip can quietly drag the monthly average up.

Diesel vehicles work on the same rupee-divided-by-km logic. The only change is that diesel prices are lower than petrol in most cities, and diesel engines typically return higher mileage, so the cost per kilometre tends to be lower. ## What to Do With the Number Once You Have It

Cost per kilometre is most useful when you compare it to something: your own baseline from three months ago, your other vehicle, or a rough estimate of what public transport would cost over the same route. It is also the only sensible number to use when billing fuel for business purposes. Saying "I drove 620 km on company work last month" is incomplete. Saying "I drove 620 km at ₹8.40/km, which is ₹5,208 in documented fuel cost" is a number your accounts person can work with. For personal budgeting, the monthly cost per kilometre multiplied by your monthly distance gives you a fuel line in your budget that is based on your actual vehicle behaviour, not a manufacturer rating and not a number from someone else's review. A vehicle that a review site calls "economical" at 19 km/l and costs ₹4.90/km on the highway is not economical if you drive almost entirely in congested city traffic and your real number is ₹9.20/km. That same vehicle in someone else's hands, on a different commute, might genuinely deliver ₹5.50/km. The mileage figure gets shared; the cost per kilometre is specific to you.

## Tracking It Without Spreadsheets

The obstacle most people hit is that calculating cost per kilometre properly requires three fields for every fill-up: litres dispensed, price per litre, and odometer reading. From those three you can derive mileage, total cost, and cost per kilometre. The shift from "kitna deti hai" to "kitne mein deti hai" is small in phrasing and substantial in usefulness. Mileage is a useful ratio. Cost per kilometre is a spending number. You drive in rupees, not in litres, so the spending number is the one that matters.
