# Recalculating Your Cost Per Kilometre on E20: A 10-Minute Refresh Every Driver Should Do

E20 became the only petrol at Indian pumps on 1 April 2026, and if you haven't refreshed your running-cost number since then, you're budgeting from a figure that belongs to a fuel that no longer exists.

Most drivers have a rough sense of their car's mileage. Fewer have a precise sense of what each kilometre actually costs them. And almost nobody has updated that figure since the fuel changed.

That's the gap this covers. Not theory, not averages from a test agency: your number, for your vehicle, on the fuel that's currently in your tank.

## Why Your Old ₹/km Number Is Now Stale

Before April 2026, petrol at Indian pumps was a mix of blends, with E10 being the predominant standard in most cities. Since 1 April 2026, every pump in India dispenses E20: 20% ethanol, minimum RON 95. There is no lower blend available at retail. You cannot opt out of it.

Two things changed simultaneously. First, the fuel's energy density dropped slightly compared to E10, which means your engine extracts marginally less energy from each litre burned. For cost per kilometre, you need at least three to five fill-ups, preferably more, to smooth out the variation that comes from traffic, load, AC usage, and the fact that no two fill-ups land at exactly the same fuel level.

### A Worked Example With Real Numbers

Say you drive a mass-market hatchback in Pune. Over five fill-ups spanning 2,200 km since April 2026, you spent ₹8,470 on petrol. Your ₹/km is:

### The City Factor

If you drive in Bengaluru or Delhi or Mumbai's peak hours, your E20 ₹/km is going to differ meaningfully from the same vehicle doing highway runs between Ahmedabad and Surat. Stop-start traffic punishes fuel economy harder now than it did on E10, because ethanol blends lose more efficiency at partial throttle than at steady cruise. This is not a reason to panic; it's a reason to track your city-driving fill-ups separately from your highway fill-ups if you do both regularly, so your budget figure actually reflects how you drive.

## How to Run the Refresh

Step one: gather your last five to eight fill-up receipts or memory-bank entries. If you've been keeping digital records, pull the data. If you haven't, start now and come back to this calculation after four fill-ups.

Step two: add up the total rupees spent across those fill-ups. Don't include anything except fuel: no servicing, no oil, no accessories. Pure fuel spend only.

Step three: subtract the odometer reading at the first fill-up from the odometer reading at the last fill-up. That's your kilometre base.

Step four: divide. ₹ total divided by km total. Write that number down somewhere you'll see it again in three months.

Step five: cross-check it against your monthly driving. If you drive roughly 1,200 km a month, multiply your ₹/km by 1,200. Is that monthly fuel budget number higher than what you've been assuming? By how much? That gap is the number that matters for your actual household or vehicle budget.

A reasonable rhythm: recalculate your cost per kilometre every three months. If petrol prices change by more than ₹2 per litre between recalculations, do it sooner. ## What to Do If Your Number Has Gone Up

If your recalculated E20 ₹/km is materially higher than your old figure, there are a few things worth checking before assuming it's all the fuel:

Tyre pressure first. Under-inflated tyres add rolling resistance and lift fuel consumption noticeably. Check cold pressure against the sticker on your door jamb or fuel flap, not the tyre sidewall maximum. Air filter second. A clogged filter restricts airflow, richens the mixture, and drops mileage. If you haven't had it checked in two service cycles, have it inspected.
