The short answer
Your AC button doesn't show up on the fuel gauge, but it shows up on your monthly petrol spend. In city traffic, the difference between AC-on and AC-off is real, measurable, and almost nobody tracks it against their own driving pattern.
Most discussions of AC fuel consumption quote a percentage: "10 to 15 percent." That figure lives in engineering whitepapers and is correct in the right conditions. The problem is that it tells you nothing useful about your specific vehicle, your city, your driving schedule, or your wallet. A 10% drop on a vehicle that returns 8 km/l in traffic is a different situation from a 10% drop on a vehicle that returns 14 km/l on a highway cruise. And city traffic is not a highway cruise.

Why City Traffic Is the Worst Case for AC Load
A car's air conditioning compressor is driven by the engine. At highway speed, the engine is producing power continuously and the compressor's draw is a relatively small fraction of total output. In stop-and-go city traffic, the engine spends long stretches idling, sometimes producing as little as 2–3 kW of mechanical output at the crankshaft. The AC compressor on a mid-size cabin can demand 3–5 kW to maintain a set temperature on a May afternoon in Hyderabad or a July afternoon in Nagpur. The ratio flips: the compressor becomes a dominant load rather than a minor one.
The result is measurable at the fuel pump. In fast-moving traffic above 60 km/h, the mileage penalty for AC is roughly 10–15% on petrol vehicles. In urban crawl below 30 km/h with frequent stops, the penalty reaches 15–25% on many vehicles and can go higher in older, less efficient systems. A mass-market hatchback that does 11 km/l in city conditions without AC may return 8.5–9 km/l with the compressor running continuously in afternoon summer traffic.
There is a compounding factor almost no one accounts for: cabin pre-cooling. If your car has been sitting in a parking lot under direct sun, the cabin temperature can exceed 55–60 degrees Celsius. Getting that space to 24 degrees takes substantially more energy than maintaining 24 degrees from a 30-degree start. The compressor runs at maximum duty cycle for the first 5–10 minutes, which is also when city traffic is densest near parking lots, malls, and offices.
The Arithmetic: Your Monthly AC Cost in Rupees
You need four numbers to do this calculation. All four are findable with a fuel log and a bit of attention:

- Your AC penalty factor: Until you measure this directly, use a conservative estimate. For vehicles made before April 2023, use 18–22% in city conditions. For newer, E20-tuned vehicles with modern compressor controls, use 12–16%. Pick the middle of the range.
- Your monthly city driving distance (km): Odometer reading at month-end minus month-start. If you mix highway and city, estimate the city fraction.
- Current petrol price at your pump (₹/litre): Varies by city. As of mid-2026, expect ₹94–₹105 per litre depending on your state and city.
The calculation in steps:
AC-on mileage = AC-off mileage × (1 - penalty factor)
Litres without AC = monthly km ÷ AC-off mileage
Litres with AC = monthly km ÷ AC-on mileage
Extra litres due to AC = Litres with AC - Litres without AC
Monthly AC cost (₹) = Extra litres × petrol price per litre
A worked example with real numbers:
Vehicle: mass-market hatchback, 4–5 years old
AC-off city mileage: 11.2 km/l (measured, not ARAI)
AC penalty: 20% (city traffic, summer, older compressor)
AC-on mileage: 11.2 × 0.80 = 8.96 km/l
Monthly city driving: 1,400 km (typical for a Delhi or Bengaluru commuter)
Litres without AC: 1,400 ÷ 11.2 = 125 litres
Litres with AC: 1,400 ÷ 8.96 = 156 litres
Extra litres: 156 - 125 = 31 litres

Over three thousand rupees per month, just from the compressor. Across a typical April-to-October AC season in most Indian cities, that is ₹21,000–₹24,000. That number changes significantly if your city mileage is genuinely measured rather than estimated, and if your AC penalty is 12% rather than 20%.
That spread between 12% and 20% is not trivial. For the same commuter above, a 12% penalty means roughly ₹1,700/month instead of ₹3,000. The difference is whether you are measuring your own vehicle or guessing from an average.
What Actually Drives the Penalty Up or Down
Several factors push your personal AC penalty toward the high end:
- Cabin size and sunroof: Larger cabins, panoramic sunroofs, and light-coloured interiors that still absorb solar load all increase compressor duty cycle. A compact SUV with a large panoramic roof parked under direct sun for three hours will have a higher pre-cooling load than a hatchback under a basement park.
- AC system age: Refrigerant charge decreases over time. A system running low on refrigerant runs the compressor harder and longer to achieve the same cooling. If your AC has not been serviced in three or more years, this is likely eating into your mileage.
- Temperature delta: The compressor works harder when the gap between outdoor and target cabin temperature is larger. The difference between a 40-degree Delhi afternoon and a 24-degree target cabin is a much higher load than the same cabin in a 28-degree Coorg evening.

Factors that bring the penalty down:
- Recirculation mode: Keeping the AC on recirculation rather than fresh-air intake after the cabin has cooled reduces compressor duty cycle because cooled air is easier to maintain than hot incoming air.
- Pre-ventilating before entry: Opening windows for 30–60 seconds before turning on the AC lets the hottest air escape. The compressor starts with a lower target delta.
- Moderate temperature setting: Running the cabin at 22 degrees rather than 18 degrees reduces compressor cycling frequency on vehicles with automatic climate control.
- Parking in shade: The simplest intervention. A cabin at 38 degrees rather than 58 degrees reduces the pre-cooling spike substantially.

How to Measure Your Own AC Penalty Directly
The cleanest method requires two fill-up cycles on a consistent route. It takes patience but produces a number you can trust.
Cycle 1 (baseline): Pick a two-week period in moderate weather where you can drive your normal city route with the AC off or on fan-only. Fill the tank to the brim at the start. Drive normally. Fill to the brim again at the end. Record: litres added, kilometres driven, fuel price. Calculate km/l. This is your AC-off baseline.
Cycle 2 (AC-on): Repeat over the following two weeks on the same routes, same time of day where possible, with the AC running at your normal usage pattern. Same brim-to-brim fill-up. Calculate km/l again.
The difference between Cycle 1 and Cycle 2, expressed as a percentage, is your personal AC penalty for that season and route. It accounts for your vehicle's compressor health, your cabin size, your parking conditions, everything.
If you have been logging fill-ups consistently, you may already have this data across seasons. A log with summer months versus monsoon months versus winter months will show the pattern directly, without a controlled experiment. Once you have your measured penalty, the monthly cost is a fixed calculation rather than a guess. If you know your AC-off mileage is 10.8 km/l and your AC-on mileage on the same route is 8.9 km/l, you know your penalty is 17.6%. That number is stable across seasons at similar ambient temperatures and traffic conditions.
