Your car's mileage in August is measurably worse than it was in March, and traffic is only part of the story. Rain, humidity, wet roads, and the A/C toggle together pull more fuel per kilometre than most drivers ever quantify.
There's a specific kind of frustration that hits around the second week of August. You filled up last Wednesday, drove roughly the same routes, and somehow the tank is empty two days earlier than usual. You blame traffic. Traffic is real, but it's not the whole answer.
Monsoon affects fuel consumption through at least four separate mechanisms, each of which adds its own quiet tax. Most drivers feel the result but never isolate the causes, because without a tank-to-tank log tied to dates, the signal hides inside the noise of daily variation. The Four Levers Monsoon Pulls
1. Rolling resistance on wet tarmac
A wet road surface doesn't grip your tyre the way dry tarmac does, but that's a handling problem, not a fuel problem. The fuel problem is different: water between tyre and road increases the viscous drag your engine must overcome to keep the car moving. The effect is modest per kilometre, maybe 1–2%, but it compounds across an entire month of wet commutes. Tyre pressure makes this worse. Cold overnight rain and 25-degree mornings will drop your tyre pressure by 1–2 PSI compared to where you set it in May. Flooded underpasses, waterlogged intersections, the one signal where drainage fails every year, all of this extends your average stoppage time per kilometre traveled. When your engine idles, it burns fuel and covers zero distance. That fuel registers in your fill-up total but contributes nothing to your km/l numerator. A 45-minute commute that stretches to 70 minutes in monsoon traffic isn't just costing you 25 minutes; it's adding roughly 20–25 minutes of idle-burn to your consumption figure with no distance credit.

4. Lower speed on flooded or congested roads
Most petrol cars reach peak fuel efficiency somewhere between 60 and 80 km/h on a flat road. Below 40 km/h, efficiency drops because you're in lower gears, the engine is working harder per unit of distance, and in automatics the torque converter is partially unlocked. Monsoon city speeds in a place like Bengaluru or Mumbai often mean long stretches at 15–25 km/h. That band is particularly punishing for fuel economy. Take a realistic scenario: a 1.5-litre petrol sedan, daily commute of 35 km round-trip, mixed city and partial arterial roads.

- August, same routes: A/C running full-time (minus 1.5 km/l), wet roads and low-speed segments (minus 0.8 km/l), extra idle time (minus 0.6 km/l estimated equivalent)
- Effective August figure: approximately 12.6 km/l
- Same 770 km now costs: ₹8,107, an increase of ₹1,500/month
That ₹1,500 is not petrol price inflation. The price per litre hasn't changed. It's pure efficiency loss from seasonal conditions. And without a fill-up log, you would never have separated it from background noise.

Step 1: Group fill-ups by month
Pull your June, July, and August entries. For each month, calculate the average tank-to-tank mileage across all fills (sum of all km / sum of all litres). Don't average the per-fill figures; average the totals, so that short partial fills don't skew the result.
Step 2: Tag the outliers before you compare
Any tank that included a significant highway segment (a weekend in Lonavala, a Pune run) will show an anomalously high number and will distort the monsoon average upward. Tag those and either exclude them from the city comparison or note that they're mixed-use. You want apples-to-apples: city commute vs city commute.
Step 3: Cross-reference against your pre-monsoon baseline
Your March or early April average is your true baseline: dry roads, moderate temperatures, A/C used only sometimes, no waterlogging delays. Compare that to your August average. The gap, expressed as a percentage, is your monsoon efficiency loss. What You Can Actually Control
Some of the monsoon penalty is fixed, you can't un-flood an underpass. But several controllable factors add up.
Tyre pressure: Check weekly. Even 3 PSI under on all four tyres increases rolling resistance measurably. This is the single cheapest intervention per rupee of fuel saved.
A/C temperature, not just on/off: Running A/C at 24 degrees instead of 18 degrees cuts compressor cycling. The difference in compressor load between 18 and 24 is significant; the difference in cabin comfort on a 29-degree monsoon day is minimal. Running it at 22 and directing vents away from direct face blast is usually comfortable enough.
Route timing: If a waterlogged intersection adds 15 minutes of near-idle to your morning commute, an alternative route that's 2 km longer but free-flowing may actually save fuel. The calculation is: extra distance at normal speed vs. idle-burn at the bottleneck. At 0.6 litres per hour idle, 15 minutes of extra stoppage costs about 0.15 litres. If the alternative 2 km are at 40 km/h and your car does 12 km/l at that speed, those 2 km cost 0.167 litres. Roughly the same. But the alternative route is faster, which usually means less A/C time too.
Engine warm-up style: On cold, rainy mornings some drivers let the engine idle for 2–3 minutes before moving. Modern fuel-injected engines don't benefit from prolonged idling; they warm up faster under gentle load. A slow first kilometre at 30–40 km/h warms the engine more efficiently than 3 minutes of standing idle.
The Budgeting Angle
